ADAPTATION STRATEGIES

INFRASTRUCTURE
Infrastructure interventions including flood defences, walls and levees.
Study site: Dublin, Ireland.
Flood risk in Dublin is dominated by responses of large-scale flood infrastructure.

PLANNED RELOCATION
Planned relocation involves reducing risk to vulnerable populations by moving whole communities away from flood prone areas.
Study Site: Totope and neighbouring settlements Volta delta in southern Ghana.
Populations are relocating due to increased inundation from the sea and landward lagoons.

LIVING WITH RISK
Living with risk involves both building capacity to adapt to floods in advance, and remedial interventions to minimise impacts e.g. through provision of community health services.
Study Site: Somerset, UK
Following major UK floods in 2013/14 in Somerset, local authorities have implemented multiple projects designed to enable adaptation to floods that centre on living with risk.
